Sphinx and the Cursed
Mummy
Developed by Eurocom
Entertainment and
Published by THQ, "Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy" is one of the
better third-person action-adventure games to date. Released in
November of 2003, Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy offers players two different
characters to play, plenty of mission objectives and side-quests, and huge
levels to explore with tons of character interactions.
Although this isn't an overly complex game to play, the levels are pretty
massive featuring lots of puzzles to solve, quests to complete, and
enemies to fight before you can move on! Starting out in ancient
Egypt your character, Sphinx, is required to help his rival Horus get the
Blade of Orisis for Imhotep. During his quest, Horus gets zapped and
you get zapped too...but not before getting the Blade of Orisis!
After this the action switches and you are suddenly Prince Tut waking up
on the day of his birthday. This is where the real fun starts as you
begin your quest in solving the many puzzles and quests throughout the
game!
Upon initial inspection everything looks normal and your first task is
revealed by your Aunt who needs you to collect Amulets for her. The
palace is huge with lots of things to explore...not to mention the fun of
making messes for your maid to clean up! But something is rotten in
the land of Egypt and it's up to Prince Tut to take down the
evildoers.
As you progress through the game, you'll be given the opportunity to
switch between control of the Sphinx and Prince Tut (who later gets turned
into a mummy!). The two characters have different abilities and
you'll be glad you've changed to the Sphinx when it comes time to combat
enemies, and collect new objects to unlock new skills. As the mummy,
your main ability is your "inability" to be seen.
Stealthily snooping around the giant temple solving puzzles is fun, but
your ability to light yourself on fire to ignite torches, conduct
electricity to zap things, or even smash yourself flat to slip in between
small spaces is inventive!
In your menu screen your "health" is measured by your
"Health Ankhs". Your total health is represented by the
number of Gold Health Ankhs and if you run out...you die. However,
you can increase that number considerably by retrieving Ankhs from killed
enemies or with the help of a "healer" as you progress through
the game. You will also accumulate "Money Scarabs" which
display the amount of money you have in the form of Gold Scarabs.
Also you'll have various weapons at your disposal such as the Blade of
Orisis, and the Blowpipe that will help Sphinx to fire different types of
darts or even solve puzzles along the way.
Overall, Eurocom has definitely found a winner with Sphinx and the Cursed
Mummy! With the unique combination of puzzle solving and action
gameplay, this game grabs your attention. Graphically, the game is a
winner. The locations and levels of the game are extremely well
detailed and even the mythological Egyptian creatures will have you taking
a second look! Traveling to and from various locations the colorful
surroundings make the game easy on the eyes. In addition, with arcade style controls that are easy to
master, most players should have no problem jumping quickly into the
action.
If you haven't tried this game out yet, it's time you did. There's
plenty of gameplay variety to be had and with the slapstick humor from
your mummy you'll be glad you did. With it's high quality visuals
and satisfying, challenging, and most importantly fun variety of gameplay,
Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy promises you a great game to watch AND play!
