Quantum Redshift
Developed by Curly Monsters
and making its debut in September of 2002, this multi-player, futuristic
racing game will give all you hardcore speed freaks the challenge you're
looking for. Talk about variety! With a customized soundtrack,
hyper-speed levels, unique weapons for each vehicle and unbelievably
stunning tracks, this game gives the Xbox the workout it deserves.
Easily, the game's strongest asset is it's accessibility for different
players. With five different levels of play, anyone from beginner to
expert will find an appropriate level of challenge.
Let's get started! Picking your character/SPARC (Single Person Armed
Racing Craft) can be a challenge in itself. Giving you sixteen
unique characters (more than half are initially hidden), provides a good
deal of variety to choose from. Also included is a tiered upgrade
system which allows players to customize their ships as they progress
through the game; and because the upgrades are tied to the player's score,
it gives you a lot of good reasons to go back and replay earlier levels
once you've upgraded your ship (cool huh?!). Your SPARC is also
equipped with a HUD (Heads-Up Display) that gives you a full picture of
your speed, weapons, shield status, lap numbers, and racing
position. 900 mph never looked so good!
Several modes of play include Tournament (Yes! A world
championship), Time Attack, Quick Race, and Multi-Player. In
Tournament Mode, you can start in both the Novice and Amateur Tournament
levels. I found starting the Novice Tournament first was best for me
as this mode gave me more races to earn more cash and allowed me to
upgrade my ship before I started the Amateur Tournament. IF you are
able to complete the Amateur Tournament, you will unlock the four-event
Expert Tournament and face the the five-event Master Tournament.
Sound tough? It is and you haven't even gotten to the toughest
level...the Redshift Tournament! And of course, as you get through
the tournaments, the competition is fierce and the speeds are faster,
challenging you to do your best.
On to the tracks. Visually, the graphics in regard to the tracks are
a work of art! With high-resolution textures and visual effects
(particularly the water effect), the developers made this game incredibly
realistic. Variety is the name of the game and with 16 tracks across
8 different locations, finding your favorite could take awhile.
Included are the "Flames of Ra"; an Egyptian Raceway, and Draco
Island; a track created around an active volcano! And that's only to name
a few.
If that wasn't enough, you can create your own personal profile too!
The first time you start to play, you'll be asked to create your profile;
which is like your own personal racing record. It will save all your
options, your tournament progress, AND everything you've unlocked during gameplay to one place under the name you choose for your
profile.
While each ship handles differently, incredibly all of them are extremely
responsive; and despite the game's focus on speed, you will quickly find
that the use of the brake is required! If you ignore the brake, you
will find yourself quickly bouncing off walls like a pinball machine
as I did more than once!
Overall, this game delivers. With amazing track designs, an awesome
soundtrack, lots of different characters and levels of play, you will soon
be feeling the NEED FOR SPEED!
