Metal Arms:
Glitch In The System
Developed by Swingin' Ape, Published
by Vivendi Universal, and released in November of 2003, Metal Arms:
Glitch In The System is not just another shoot 'em up RPG. Voted the
"Sleeper Hit Of The Year" in the February Issue of Xbox
Magazine, Metal Arms comes complete with a variety of cool weapons,
drivable vehicles, innovative environments, and outstanding
controls.
You play the title character, Glitch...a small but gritty robot found
buried in the rubble and crumbled ruins of a once-thriving city.
Playing the game from a 3rd person perspective, the main emphasis of this
game is definitely the action! Glitch and his widely varied arsenal
of 18 different weapons has been reactivated to take on General Corrosive
and his mindless army of Mil bots bent on world domination.
Starting your game, you are given the option of either a single-player
campaign or multi-player where you can play against your friends.
Playing the single-player campaign, Glitch finds himself battling his way
through not only six distinctive environments, but over 30 different
missions to complete on his way to saving his fellow bots.
As Glitch progresses through completing his missions, the game gets more amusing,
the action more outrageous and the weapons get much bigger and more
powerful! Most of the weapons you will find scattered throughout the
levels, picking up ammunition and varied weapons as you battle your way
through the onslaught of Mils. Other ways to acquire weapons include
picking them up from those nasty Mils you've blown to bits and also using
"washers" destroyed Mils leave behind for you to pick up and use
them as "money" to buy upgrades from the "Barter Droids".
Don't pass these guys by! Purchasing upgrades to your already
powerful arsenal is a must if you want to progress through the game as the
levels and the Mils get more powerful and challenging.
Ultimately, Glitch also gets to hijack a number of vehicles, including an entertaining
hovercraft with giant pincers you can use to pick your enemies up out of
the action and drop them into inhospitable places. Hijacking tanks,
gun turrets, and "Rats" (Rapid Armored Transports), Glitch just
seems to keep plugging away.
One of the most clever features in this game is Glitch's ability to
"jack" into other bots and control them via his "Remote
Control Tether". "Jacking" into the enemy and
utilizing the enemy bot's abilities can be used to secure a clear path for
the determined little Glitch as any damage inflicted is taken to the
"hijacked" bot and not Glitch! That is...until the Mils
discover you are not who you pretend to be and quickly figure out their
friendly little bot is no longer a friend but a foe! As if that
wasn't enough, Glitch can also pick up "Recruiter Grenades"
allowing him to "recruit" enemy bots and help defeat the evil
General Corrosive!
Developers have managed to bring superb action and adventure to life with
this fun and inventive RPG. Tapping into the power of the Xbox, the
graphics are colorful and smooth while maintaining great frame-rate
throughout the game. With arcade style controls that are easy to
master, most players should have no problem jumping quickly into the
action. Impressive surround sound also gives this game a boost as
the sounds of metal falling, explosions booming, and outstanding vocal
acting is a big plus in playing this outstanding RPG.
Overall, Metal Arms: Glitch In The System is one of the best games
of 2003 that you've probably not heard of. Simply put, this game
looks great! With universal charm, innovative and colorful graphics
and levels, outstanding controls, and one thing most games lack...an
amusing sense of humor, Metal Arms gives you a whole lotta bang for your
buck!
Overall Game Rating: 9.2 out of 10
