MechAssault

Developed by Microsoft Game Studios and released in November of 2002, MechAssault for Xbox is based on the original "MechWarrior" game originally designed for the PC.  Revamped specifically for the Xbox, MechAssault certainly goes way beyond the original PC game where your "Mech" was slow, hard to maneuver, and seemed to lumber around like a forklift on Valium.

Developed to be included in the Xbox Live titles, this game is all about blistering pace and explosive combat.  Stunning graphics, awesome explosions, fully destructible levels, and easy-handling controls make this FPS (First Person Shooter) game one of the best Xbox Live titles available.

Featuring 20 different levels and 21 different "Mechs" to choose from, finding the right Mech for each assignment is the key to advancing in this game.  Given your military objectives by operatives on the ground, you must figure out not only the best Mech for the job, but the best way to complete your objective in order to advance.

The Mechs are organized from the "light Mechs" to the slower, but very powerful "assault Mechs".  They all have different weapons payloads, so when offered a choice of the Mech you want to kick some enemy ass with, be sure and pay close attention to the type of mission you will be performing and make your Mech selection carefully.  One of the best features of the game is how detailed your Mechs are.  The graphical detail and smooth animation of the Mechs definitely  make this game easy on the eyes.

In the beginning, you'll be starting off on the easier missions destroying bases, tanks and fighting off troops.  Did I say easy?!  You're certainly going to have a fight on your hands getting through the first few missions and completing your objectives.  However, once that's done, we get to real meat of the game!  Battling other Mechs.  Taking on these powerhouses of walking metal is pure fun and the levels increasingly difficult when faced with Mechs of equal power and size.

Also included is the ever popular and important HUD (Heads Up Display) that allows you to keep an eye on your Mech.  With a weapons display, heat indicator, armor status indicator, and sensor screen, the HUD is a definite asset when you're in the heat of battle.

Most of the Mechs available are already outfitted with their own offensive and defensive weapons and many feature jump jets as well.  When choosing your weapons, pick carefully.  The "Energy Weapons" require your Mech to have stored energy and will take time to charge before firing.  Not only that, they also produce heat which you will need to keep a close eye on in your HUD otherwise you will quickly find yourself overheating and a sitting duck for the enemy.

In addition to the stock weapons, you can also "salvage" weapons and armor from other enemy Mechs, vehicles, and even by destroying certain buildings.  Each salvage weapon you achieve increases the level for that particular weapon and with each additional level, the weapon's firepower increases until the weapons in that level are depleted.

If this isn't enough, MechAssault is an Xbox Live title which gives gamers access to free downloadable content, new Mechs, and new maps.  With this much variety, MechAssault has only one way to go...up, given that Microsoft will continue to provide new content downloads to keep gamers satisfied.

If you're a fan of the "MechWarrior" PC titles, you will definitely enjoy this upgraded version of the old classic.
